DATASHEET N° 4, CLASSICAL MUSIC, ALBENIZ, ISAAC, ESPANA, ZORTZICO
DATASHEET N° 3, CLASSICAL MUSIC, ALBENIZ, ISAAC, ESPANA, CAPRICHO CATALAN
DATASHEET N° 2, CLASSICAL MUSIC, ALBENIZ, ISAAC, ESPANA, TANGO
DATASHEET N°5

CONTEXT OF THE SEARCH

NAME OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC: BWV 8, CANTATA N° 8, I, CORO (= CHORUS)
NAME OF THE COMPOSER: BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN

SEARCH

IN YMUSIC, (I) INSERT BWV 8. The six parts of the Cantata are displayed. Double click on the Coro.

Information related to the piece of music appears in YMusic (directly reported here in sections 1, 3 and 4 and completed by information related to the composer in section 2 and an appreciation of the listener in section 6), helping to introduce the following elementary analysis.

1. ID CARD

IN YMUSIC, (I) DOUBLE CLICK ON THE TITLE OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC; THE FOLLOWING VALUES APPEAR.

* TEMPO: THAT PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTS VARIATIONS AT THE LEVEL OF TEMPO

Start tempo value (beats/minute) = 92
Mean tempo value (beats/minute) = 91
Standard tempo deviation (beats/minute) = 2
Lower tempo value (beats/minute) = 80
Higher tempo value (beats/minute) = 92
Tempo unchanged (%) = 97

Comment: these variations, within the piece, are not very significant and thus the velocity of the instruments is very regular.

* DURATION: 269.5 SECONDS

Comment: in other words, around 4 minutes.

* TIME SIGNATURE: 6/4 (100%)

Comment: YMusic displays 6/4, which is proportional to the 12/8 found in the sheet music of the piece. That time signature is considered popular in the sense that it makes the music accessible to everyone, as well as the numerous arpeggios present from the beginning of the piece.

2. THE COMPOSER

* THE COMPOSER WROTE FOR: SOLO INSTRUMENTS AS WELL AS ORCHESTRAS, SMALL ENSEMBLES AND CHOIRS
* FORM OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTED IN THIS DATASHEET: CORO (= CHORUS, FOR VOICES AND A SMALL ORCHESTRA)

Comment: voices (which are the main elements of a cantata) appear after around one minute of introduction. The soprano voices sing the melody and the other voices accompany them as counterpoint parts, simply supporting the tune.

* MUSICAL ANECDOTE:

Even if the cantata is generally centered on voices, the part of the orchestra may be noticed here, notably because the oboes are echoing each other into an oscillating movement.

3. AWARENESS

* YMUSIC DISPLAYS (A LIST OF) INSTRUMENT(S) CONTAINED IN THE PIECE OF MUSIC: 6 CHROMATIC INSTRUMENTS (ORGAN, OBOE, STRINGS, FLUTE, CHOIR AND HORN).

* RELATED REMARKS:

The piece contains 6657 notes (organ = 11%, oboe = 29%, strings = 37%, flute = 14%, choir = 6%, horn = 2%).
Actually, the instruments chosen by Bach were : flauto traverso, oboe d’amore 1, oboe d’amore 2, violino , violino 2, viola, soprano, alto, tenore, basso (= the 4 voices of the choir) and continuo.

The instruments written by Bach in the sheet music are: oboe d’amore, tenore and continuo. The list displayed by YMusic actually gives a correct idea of the content of the piece, strings being a generic term designing the continuo. About the strings, we may notice the presence of pizzicati (groups of notes produced by unplucked strings).

4. SEARCH

* IN YMUSIC, I NAVIGATE THE 'VIEW YMUSIC DATABASE' TAB.
* I ACTIVATE THE FIRST CHECKBOX AND SCROLL THROUGH THE ASSOCIATED MENU TO SELECT ‘NUMBER OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS’.

YMUSIC DISPLAYS A DOUBLE ENTRY TABLE: OTHER PIECES OF MUSIC WRITTEN BY THE COMPOSER APPEAR.

I NOTICE HOW THEY RELATE:

Around 150 pieces of music written by Bach appear around the search ‘BWV 8’, at the moment. All have a point in common: they contain no percussion. That is why one unique point is displayed within the double entry table.

The percussion family contains very ancient instruments that were always considered very respectable and used in religious ceremonies, mainly in Asia.

Bach wrote most of his music for the very European Lutheran Church during the 18th century. The main instruments promoted by that Church were voices and organ. In such a cultural context, using instruments of the percussion family would not have been appreciated.

However, Bach was indeed an innovative composer who introduced various new musical techniques, including in his cantatas; and his contemporaries talked about his ‘creative methods’.

CONTEXT OF THE SEARCH

NAME OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC: ESPANA, ZORTZICO
NAME OF THE COMPOSER: ALBENIZ, ISAAC

SEARCH

IN YMUSIC, (I) INSERT THE NAME OF THE COMPOSER.

Information related to the piece of music appears in YMusic (directly reported here in sections 1, 3 and 4 and completed by information
related to the composer in section 2 and an appreciation of the listener in section 6), helping to introduce the following elementary analysis.

1. ID CARD

IN YMUSIC, (I) DOUBLE CLICK ON THE TITLE OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC; THE FOLLOWING VALUES APPEAR.

* TEMPO: THAT PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTS VARIATIONS AT THE LEVEL OF TEMPO

Start tempo value (beats/minute) = 226
Mean tempo value (beats/minute) = 216
Standard tempo deviation (beats/minute) = 6
Lower tempo value (beats/minute) = 194
Higher tempo value (beats/minute) = 226
Tempo unchanged (%) = 12

Comment: the melody of the piece is characterized by remarkably steep dynamic changes.

* DURATION: 163.5 SECONDS

Comment: in other words, less than 3 minutes.

* TIME SIGNATURE: 5/8 (100%)

Comment: 5/8 is the usual time signature for the zortzico, which is both a poem and a dance from the Basque Country (in France); the measure is divided in 2 fragments that follow one another in time: 3/8 and 2/8. However, between the 18th and the 20th centuries, the time signature of the zortzico was not fixed: composers used various time signatures.

2. THE COMPOSER

* THE COMPOSER WROTE FOR: SOLO PIANO, SOLO GUITAR, OPERA ORCHESTRA

* FORM OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTED IN THIS DATASHEET: ZORTZICO FOR SOLO PIANO

Comment: besides Isaac Albéniz, other classical music composers, like Maurice Ravel, Pablo de Sarasate or Charles-Valentin Alkan, incorporated zortzico into classical music pieces.

* MUSICAL ANECDOTE:

The zortzico written by Albéniz presents the traditional pointed rhythm usually found in that dance, the only pointed note being a B. In fact, the composer wanted to insist on it in replacement of a role originally assigned to the percussion.

3. AWARENESS

CONTEXT OF THE SEARCH

NAME OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC: ESPANA, CAPRICHO CATALAN
NAME OF THE COMPOSER: ALBENIZ, ISAAC

SEARCH

IN YMUSIC, (I) INSERT THE NAME OF THE COMPOSER.

Information related to the piece of music appears in YMusic (directly reported here in sections 1, 3 and 4 and completed by information related to the composer in section 2 and an appreciation of the listener in section 6), helping to introduce the following elementary analysis.

Standard tempo deviation (beats/minute) = 5
Lower tempo value (beats/minute) = 98
Higher tempo value (beats/minute) = 124
Tempo unchanged (%) = 22

Comment: the tempo of the piece does not vary much, but frequently (tempo unchanged = only 22%), which requires virtuosity from the performer (and like that the ‘Caprice’ deserves its name).

* DURATION: 125.5 SECONDS

Comment: in other words, around 2 minutes.

* KEY SIGNATURE: Eb Major/C Minor (100%)

Comment: in this sheet music, that key signature includes three flats as usual: E, A and B.

2. THE COMPOSER

* THE COMPOSER WROTE FOR: SOLO PIANO, SOLO GUITAR, OPERA ORCHESTRA

* FORM OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTED IN THIS DATASHEET: CAPRICHO FOR SOLO PIANO

Comment: that part of the suite puts the emphasis on the melody, which is supported by the left hand with a few notes.

* MUSICAL ANECDOTE:
Albéniz wrote ‘dolce’ several times on the sheet music and, in fact, the caprice (which is by the way a form that is quite free) gives an impression of sweetness.

Higher tempo value (beats/minute) = 62

Comment: the melody of the piece is characterized by small dynamic changes.

* DURATION: 181.7 SECONDS

Comment: in other words, around 3 minutes.

* TIME SIGNATURE: 2/4 (100%)

Comment: musically speaking, this tango resembles Cuban contradanza (or ‘danza criolla’), whose time signature is 2/4.

2. THE COMPOSER

* THE COMPOSER WROTE FOR: SOLO PIANO, SOLO GUITAR, OPERA ORCHESTRA
* FORM OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTED IN THIS DATASHEET: TANGO FOR SOLO PIANO

Comment: this type of tango, despite its name, has no relationship to the well-known genre named tango flamenco and is a Spanish version of the contra dance, a folk dance that has its roots in French and English dance styles of the 17th century.

* MUSICAL ANECDOTE:

Music was the first love of Isaac Albéniz, who began to play when he was a child and to compose when he was barely an adult. Also, music helped him to find his spouse, Rosina! In fact, she met him in a music shop, while she was searching for his scores. Charmed, Isaac invited Rosina to visit his musical studio and gave her piano lessons. Two months after their encounter, they were married! Historians of music say that it had an effect on the musical production of Albéniz: from this moment, he switched from musical performance to music composition.

* THE COMPOSER WROTE FOR: SOLO PIANO, SOLO GUITAR, OPERA ORCHESTRA

* FORM OF THE PIECE OF MUSIC PRESENTED IN THIS DATASHEET: PRELUDE FOR SOLO PIANO

Comment: in fact, this piece is the first one of an ensemble of six. As usual, the prelude is mainly constructed around two succeeding musical ideas that include arpeggios and it ends with a short final resolution.

* MUSICAL ANECDOTE:

A child prodigy, Albéniz was first a performer. During his twenties, he became known as a composer for his salon music for the piano. In his thirties, he met a musicologist and composer (Filip Pedrell) who was collecting traditional Spanish folk songs. That was the origin of his interest for his home country’s musical folklore. Albéniz began to compose pieces influenced by Spanish (especially Andalusian) music, mixing its forms with those of classical music pieces written by Bach, Beethoven, etc.
